Systemic representation is a way of resolving issues in our connections with other people or barriers that we feel exist and experience as challenges. It was developed by Bert Hellinger, a German psychotherapist.
Hellinger focused on family systems to uncover the deeper forces that unconsciously influence our thoughts, behaviors, and emotional experiences from generation to generation. The bonds of family create a model of the family system to uncover and transform hidden patterns that are difficult to understand and change.
Over time, this systemic approach has been applied to other systems such as our connection to nature, friendships, community, and world issues. These approaches explore ways to understand our relationships and resolve our most complex issues.
In systemic representation, we create a system model with volunteer representatives, objects, or guided imagery. In a typical workshop, participants are chosen to represent members or elements of the family or organization that functions as a system. In this process, hidden and unexpected dynamics operating within the system are revealed and addressed in a way that aims to find a healthy and respectful place for all members of the system in question.
